An Overshot Basket Backpack Workshop

Join me for a three-day workshop in my studio at Marshall High Studios on Blannahassett Island along the French Broad River. We’ll work with Appalachian overshot patterning and push it into dimensional form, transforming flat woven cloth into a functional basket backpack.

Day 1

We begin with lineage and place. I’ll share the history of overshot in Madison County and the women who carried these patterns forward. You’ll arrive to a pre-warped loom so we can focus on weaving rather than setup. Using basketry reed as weft, we’ll weave overshot in a way that slightly softens and obscures the pattern while keeping it recognizable. The goal is not perfect replication but thoughtful interpretation.

Day 2

We’ll remove our woven panels from the loom and begin shaping them into the round. You’ll learn how to structure and form the cloth so it holds as a basket. This is where weaving becomes sculpture.

Day 3

We finish construction and work with leather straps and closures. By the end of the weekend, you’ll leave with a wearable basket backpack. It can function as a knitting bag, apple basket, everyday carry piece, or simply as a sculptural object for your home. It’s built to be used.

Travel to Marshall

Marshall is about 30 minutes north of Asheville in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The closest airport is Asheville Regional Airport (AVL), which offers direct flights from many major cities and is an easy drive to town. Other airports within driving distance include Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (approximately 1.5 hours), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (approximately 2 hours), and McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville (approximately 2 hours). Renting a car is the simplest option, but I’m happy to coordinate a shuttle pickup from downtown Asheville if needed. Once you’re here, Marshall is small and walkable.

Both offer easy access to the studio, food, coffee, and music in town. Marshall is a small mountain community centered around craft and creativity — an easy place to settle in and focus on making.
