The Wool Lab: Cases

The Wool Lab is an innovative seasonal guide to the best wool fabrics and yarns in the world. It showcases real samples of commercially available fabrics aligned to the season’s macro-themes.

The Wool Lab is created twice a year by The Woolmark Company to inspire and inform the textile industry, fashion professionals and retailers about the vast potential of Merino wool.

For the last 5 years, biannually, I have worked remotely with the Riccardo Rami Studio located in Prato, Italy. Each season they handpick a beautiful textile that reflects the current trend in wool. From that wool, I create a suite of handmade wool cases.

These cases serve two purposes. This case is meant to be used for utilitarian means. It is a vessel for which several folios that themselves contain countless woolen samples as well as trend imagery of the season.

The other purpose is to showcase the fabric by manipulating it into a tailored sculptural object. I employ several tailoring techniques to the fabric itself such as pleating and binding. Then, the addition of leather, embroidery and metal show the harmony that wool creates when combined with other natural materials.
